Alev Ebuzziya Siesbye

Juror

Ceramic Artist

The Ebüzziya Siesbye bowl is now an icon in the canon of contemporaray ceramics alongside the work of Lucie Rie, Richard DeVore and others who have distinguihed the bowl form with their particular creative vision. One cannot open a book or catalog on European ceramics today without seeing her indelible imprint in vessel making. in the United States as well as she is viewed as a kind of magician with space and volume. It is important to dwell on this achievement for a moment. It is one thing to say that Ebüzziya Siesbye has made one of the great ceramic bowls of the twentieth century. Its is another thing to appreciate how difficult an achievment this is. When a form has been produced with distinction for tens of thousands of years, it is the rare artist who can come up with a new vision that can produce a meaningful addition to the history of that form. It is the equivalent of producing one of the great chairs of our century, a significant achievement.
